It was many days since he felt the joy of a full stomach. He was in no state for such a long march because he had dropped all his equitment behind to save wait.Tom decided not to take anything of his because it would hold him back.Tom didnt have enough food for the journey. He only had three biscuits and two sticks of choclate.Tom knew that if he fell he would be in great danger.Tom set of trudging slowely and sinking up to his thighs in the soft snow.Todays expolrers wear crampons with metal spikes that provide a grip on the slippery ice.The wind was by now cutting into Toms face.He longed for a big warm of tea or coffe.Tom stumbled, crawled and walked for hours without taking a break. He coverd sixteen miles almost have the distance to the hut, before pausing for a rest.Panting for a breath he sat down in the snow and ate two biscuits and the two sticks of choclate. He craved a hot drink.Tom placed the last biscuit in his pocket for emergincies!Taking a break did not help Tom It made him feel tierd. But dozing of in his sleep was to risky becaus he could of froze to death. So he hurriedly started to walk again. All around were creavasses that could gobble up a man in seconds. He could not relaxor afford to take a wrong step.Tom edeged nearer to base camp. After a few more hours Tom came to a small hill near the camp. But the climb was a terrible ordeal.Normally he might of run up the hill. However Tom was so exhausted that he could hardley walk straight ata times and at times crawl was his only optine. Finally he made it up the hill, but a huge blow waited at the summit.Tom looked down at the hut and strained his eyes to catch soigns of men or dogsmoving about below. The sight shatterd Tom. IT meant there was no one in the hut to fetch lt evans and bill.Without help Tom would heved to forced to reach the expidations other hut which was 22km(14miles) away across the ice.To hide awful disapontment Tom ate his last biscuit and sucked on a bit of ice.But over his shoulder was a new menace was threatening. From the hill Tom could see darkening clouds in the distance which signalled  that a blizzard was was blowing in.he ran down the hill as fast as he could.Tom was desprate.Tom saw paw prints of snow from the dogs team.It was a sign that loife craved.Tom hurried closer to the hut.Tom finaly got there and opend the door of the camp.He took a tiring step inside the door and collasped.By amazing luck one of the men in the camp was a doctor. The only doctor within the 640km(440miles).He quikley gave Tom a shot of wisky to recive him.A few more minutes and Tom would of been dead.Toms amazing march of 56km(35miles) took 18 hours without proper rest,Hot food or hot drinks.Tom was a modest man and did not boast about his brillant march. He always siad his legs done all the work.Tom was a very brave man indeed!
